Jack Holt born Charles John Holt in New York, NY on this date, May 31, in 1888.
The perpetually snarling, toughest S.O.B. of the movies for a good number of years. I especially like his early talkies and pre-Code titles (big surprise, right?). Movies such as Flight (1929), Dirigible (1931), Whirlpool, and Black Moon (both 1934) are recommended.
I recently picked up a copy of his 1941 serial Holt of the Secret Service co-starring Evelyn Brent. My DVD player has been a bit temperamental with this Alpha Video, so I haven't gotten through it all yet, but one thing is clear: he's a bit older, but Jack Holt is still the toughest guy in town! Good to catch up with Miss Brent ten or so years after I'm used to seeing her as well.
