1935-38 R95 8×10 Linen Textured Premium Photos
Issued beginning in July 1935 through to at least 1938.
Offered by The New York Mirror and more commonly with The Movie Fan Newsletter as part of the “Emo Movie Club.”
U.S. issue.
Each premium measures 8″ X 10″.
Printed on a linen-textured paper. A high quality paper stock with a linen type feel to it.
A large black & white image of the film star takes up most of the front. Typically star’s name, studio and current film project are named in bottom border.
Backs are blank.
I am pretty sure that these premiums are the items given the notation “R95” by Jefferson Burdick in his classic The American Card Catalog. R95 is found on page 113 of the 1960 edition and are described as “R95–Movie Stars, 8 x 10 linen finish, several series.” They are placed under Section 19, Candy and Gum Cards Issues 1933-1942, which is consistent with the date and possibly offering insight as to the origin of these premiums.
Images of Movie Fan advertisements on this page were donated by R95 collector Daniel in 2008. All R95 images are from my stock accumulated between 2004 to present over several different purchases (accounting for the different sizes of some scans).
The July 1936 edition of The Movie Fan that Daniel sent was a 12-page publication containing an advertisement for an album intended specifically to house these linen premiums (above right), as well as a checklist of the 88 linen photos issued 8 per month between September 1935 and July 1936 (further below).
During the last update of this page in 2008 it contained images of 178 different R95 Premiums plus reference to another 43, bringing the total number of known R95 Premiums to 221.
At this current update (2012) (2014) (2017) our gallery now contains 246 different images plus at the very bottom of the page are an additional 12 R95 premiums named by Daniel as being in his collection. Total number of known R95 Premiums thus: 258.

Checklist of 1935-38 R95 8×10 Linen Textured Premium Photos
Notes: All stars named in this checklist are pictured in the main gallery above; Listed alphabetically by last name; Some stars promote more than one film causing multiple listings. For those labeled “1 of 2 poses” there are two totally different premiums promoting different films. For those labeled “Identical poses” the premiums are exactly the same except a different film is named in the bottom border.
New for 2017 – I now have the dates of the first 13 mailings of the EMO Movie Club, July 1935 to July 1936, so I have appended this ‘date of mailing’ to the end of each item in the checklist where this information is known.
