About 1940 A & M Wix MAX Cinema Cavalcade Tobacco Cards
Issued in 1940 by A & M Wix with MAX Virginia Cigarettes brand in South Africa.
This page covers Volume 1 of two sets. Each Volume contains 250 cards in three different sizes and a hardcover album for placement of the cards.
Issued in South Africa with bilingual English and Afrikaans text on reverse of cards.
Collectors also had the option to request their album in either English or Afrikaans.
The Volume 1 album has a blue cover with a metal reproduction of an Oscar statuette on the outside.
The album is subtitled "A Thrilling and Romantic Story Reviewing the Achievements of the Wonderful New Art that brings the World to the World; Parades before our eyes the Great Figures of History; Makes living the Famous Characters of Fiction, Mirrors the Present, and Glimpses the Future."
Brevity was not their strong point. The album is in fact a storybook representing the history of film to 1939. Inside the book are spaces for the various 250 MAX "Cinema Cavalcade" tobacco cards to be placed. The cards were issued with gummed backs.
The album also included 5 full color pages reproducing scenes from films of the period. They are shown following the text checklist further down this page.
50 of the 200 cards are color. The remainder in black & white.
There are three different sized cards in this set: Small are 1-1/2" X 2-5/8"; Medium 2-3/16" X 3"; and Large 2-11/16 X 4-1/16".
There was no variation to the sizes (or color) during printing. Thus card #1 picturing the 1896 scene of "The Arrival of a Train at a Country Station" was always a Medium sized black & white card. The album has a medium sized space for placement of this specific card.Key cards include the 6 different picturing The Marx Brothers; 5 different with Laurel and/or Hardy; 5 with W.C. Fields; plus cards of Warner Oland as Charlie Chan and Frederic March as Mr. Hyde.
Volume 2 is similar in these details with an entirely different checklist of 250. I will post a Guide to Volume 2 at some point in the future.
