Card Characteristics
This updated page is packed with a ton of info, names and images relating to both Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the 1936 and '37 Nestle's Stars of the Silver Screen sets of trading cards from England.
A set of two galleries showing all 150 cards as well as text checklists for both series are included a bit further down this page.
Volume 1 comprises cards #1-100.
Volume 2 comprises cards #101-150.
Each of these 150 paper stock cards measures approximately 1-9/16" X 2-1/4 inches, however; I've now confirmed that larger 4-1/2" X 6-1/4 inch oversized cards were available of each as well.
Luckily I still had one of the larger variation cards on hand to show you a side by side size comparison. At one time I had approximately 50 of the larger variation Nestle cards, numbered from both series 1-150, and the card numbers and star images each matched the smaller Nestle cards currently in my possession as I create this page.
There is descriptive text on back of the larger cards that I suspect matches the text found inside the albums housing the smaller cards. Here is a scan of the reverse side of the Herbert Marshall cards:
Even more fascinating, here's how one acquired the larger cards. Similar to acquiring Dixie Premiums in exchange for Dixie Lids the following Nestle ad offers the larger variation cards in exchange for sending in a completed album of the smaller cards to their Calcutta offices.
The ad offers just 3 of the larger cards in exchange for a completed Volume 2 album while offering 6 larger cards from Series 1 for a completed Volume 1 album.
(I wish I had my Nestle bigs back--if this was the only way you could get them then I severely underpriced mine!)
There were two albums issued to house each Volume of paper stock Nestle cards. Each is shown at the very bottom of this page.
Offered in Multiple Countries
The "Stars of the Silver Screen" series of cards were Printed in England. These were also printed in Spain under the set title "Estrellas de Cine" and apparently other countries as well. I had a handful of the Spanish variation a few years ago and can show the James Cagney side by side with the British version:
