Born on this date: Beryl Mercer in 1876; Mary Duncan in 1895; Bert Lahr in 1895; Regis Toomey in 1898; Alfred Hitchcock in 1899; Charles “Buddy” Rogers in 1904; Barbara Bennett in 1906; Mabel Todd in 1907; Gene Raymond in 1908; John Beal in 1909; Rita Johnson in 1913; June Brewster in 1913; Gloria Dickson in 1916; and Neville Brand in 1920.

All links lead to each actor’s IMDb page, set to open in a new tab.

Classic Movie Daily subscribers will find images of Gene Raymond, Mary Duncan, and Charles “Buddy” Rogers towards the bottom of today’s issue, plus a few smaller “birthday” pics at the bottom of this page. Today’s mailing also includes clippings related to Gloria Dickson and Alfred Hitchcock. Plus a new Lightning Review and associated images.

TCM TV Alerts through tomorrow at 7 am:
These titles play on TCM’s US schedule and all quoted times are for my own local Eastern time zone.

—Thursday, TCM Summer Under the Stars, Ann-Margret day (TCM.com link).

Outside the scope of our usual coverage (I don’t even check birthdays for stars born as late as Ann-Margret!), but I do have an impossible time turning the channel from The Cincinnati Kid (1965 – 10:00 pm), especially if Edward G. Robinson and/or Joan Blondell happen to be seated at the card table.

—Groucho Marx day begins with the 1937 short Sunday Night at the Trocadero on Friday at 6 am. Full Groucho details at TCM’s Summer Under the Stars mini-site here.

Cliff’s Note
—I’ve been trying to find a better way to capture all of the past images that have mailed out to email subscribers, and I think I finally have. The existing page that simply provides a text link to every past image post isn’t very exciting on the eyes, but I think this new page may do the trick—stand back and give it time to load! Still a work in progress, but I’ll make it more prominent on the site sometime soon.

—Today’s issue features another Helen Twelvetrees-related Lightning Review, though if I didn’t mention her it would just look like I was talking about another Spencer Tracy movie. We were light on large format “birthday” images today, so I included shots of Helen and Spence just after today’s write-up.

Have a great day,
Cliff
