In Houston, Vidor's friend spots a beauty in the back of an open touring car:
"When I told Miss Arto that I had just written a scenario and was going to "shoot it" during the Galveston Races, my friend might just as well have taken his hat and left. A motion-picture actress was just what she hoped to be ... A week later when Florence Arto told her family that she was going to be an actress in a moving picture, her father hit the ceiling and told her that I would never be permitted to enter the house again" (34).
"I paid a visit to the Arto home, faced Florence's irate father, and informed him that I wnted to marry his daughter" (40).
