About the 1933 Dixie Premiums
The first movie star Dixie Premiums and they don't even look like Dixie Premiums! Measuring 8-1/2" X 11" these black and white photos have a thick white/cream border, facsimile signature, either over the photo or on the border, and a small MGM logo at the left or right of the bottom border. Printed on a heavy stock paper.
The complete set of 1933 Movie Star Dixie Premiums is comprised of 24 different premium photos, 19 of which are currently shown in our Photo ID Guide Gallery. The remaining 5 are filled in courtesy of Tom Popelka's Dixie Premiums Checklist, mandatory for the bookshelf of the Dixie collector.
Quoting Popelka's excellent introduction, History of Dixie Premiums, regarding this initial film star issue:
So in 1933 Dixie issued a set of 24 premiums in black and white in a size of 8-1/2" X 11". These did not have a back with action photos and information on the stars. In fact, they look like a publicity portrait. The untrained eye will mistake these premiums for just that--publicity photos. Many are still unaware that these photos are actually Dixie Premiums.
And I must admit I've made that mistake myself in the past.
